The Documentary: Advanced Longform

For advanced improvisers ready to explore grounded comedy, realism, and rich ensemble storytelling.

The improvised Documentary mimics the tone, structure, and emotional truth of real documentary films. Through interviews, direct-to-camera confessionals, reenactments, and truthful scenes, the ensemble builds a layered, comedic portrait of a community, event, or person.

This Assembly program is ideal for performers who want deeper character work, grounded acting, and narrative cohesion.

What You’ll Learn

  • Interview & Confessional Techniques
Playing grounded, unusual characters who reveal story through their perspectives.

  • Building a Documentary World
How to create a cohesive subject, theme, or community without over-plotting.

  • Reenactments vs. Real-Time Scenes
Switching between formats while maintaining clarity and tone.

  • Playing Truthful Absurdity
How to balance the realism of documentary with comedic oddities and heightening.

  • Story Arcs & Narrative Flow
How to shape a documentary without forcing plot — letting the ensemble’s discoveries guide it.
