Pretty Flower: Pattern, Premise & Heightening Intensive

For improvisers who want to explode one tiny idea into a whole comedic universe.

Pretty Flower is a joyful, fast-paced longform structure built on pattern, premise, and bold character exploration. Starting from a single monologue or interview, the ensemble creates a branching web of scenes — each one exploring different angles, worlds, or comedic “flowers” that bloom from the same initial idea.

In this Assembly program, improvisers sharpen their ability to pull premise from suggestion, generate multiple grounded characters, and heighten with clarity and imagination.

What You’ll Learn

• Premise Pulling From Monologues/Interviews
  Spotting multiple playable ideas inside a single story or perspective.

• Branching Scene Logic
  How to follow a detail, pattern, or emotional truth into a new comedic world.

• Heightening Through Analogs
  Using parallel characters, heightened versions, or metaphorical worlds to build comedic texture.

• Character Contrast & Emotional Range
  Creating distinct, grounded characters across multiple scenes while keeping choices bold and honest.

• Tracking Patterns Across a Show
  Ensuring the “flowers” feel tied together, not random — creating a cohesive longform piece.

Live Performance: Two 30-Minute Pretty Flower Sets

Students will perform two full Pretty Flower shows, allowing them to practice branching patterns, character variety, and thematic cohesion under real performance conditions. Instructor notes follow each set.

Prerequisite

Intermediate or advanced longform experience. Students should be comfortable pulling premise, playing multiple characters, and supporting ensemble patterns.
