LEVEL 1 — FOUNDATIONS OF LONGFORM IMPROV

A beginner-friendly introduction to grounded, joyful, emotionally connected longform improv.

Overview

Level 1 is The Assembly’s warm, welcoming introduction to longform improv. This course teaches students how to be present, listen deeply, trust their instincts, and create simple, grounded comedic scenes with a partner.

The focus is on clarity, emotional honesty, supportive play, and building confidence. Through partnered reps, group exercises, and guided practice, students learn the foundational skills that make longform work powerful, collaborative, and joyful.

No longform experience required. Just curiosity and a willingness to play!

What You’ll Learn

• Yes, And & Ensemble Support

Building scenes together, lifting your partner, and transforming small ideas into shared discoveries.

• Emotional Presence & Honest Reactions

Connecting to the moment, reacting truthfully, and letting scenes grow from behaviour instead of inventing clever ideas.

• Clarity & Simple Scene Construction

Establishing who you are, where you are, and what’s happening without pressure or overthinking.

• Finding the Fun

Recognizing interesting behaviour, patterns, and perspectives — then following them with confidence.

• Grounded Characters & Relationships

Playing real, believable people and building authentic connections onstage.

• Playfulness, Confidence & Creative Trust

Letting go of “getting it right” and discovering your own natural comedic voice.

Our Approach

Assembly training emphasizes emotional grounding, clarity, and supportive ensemble work from Day 1. Students learn why these tools matter — not just the mechanics — which prepares them for higher-level longform faster and with more confidence.

The environment is intentionally low-pressure, welcoming, and joy-forward. You will never be thrown into something you’re not ready for, and instructors are trained to meet each student where they’re at.

Who This Is For

  • Absolute beginners

  • Actors or performers curious about improv

  • People returning to improv who want a grounded foundation

  • Anyone looking for confidence, creativity, or community

By the End of This Course, You Will…

  • Feel confident improvising simple, grounded, joyful scenes

  • Understand how to listen, support, and trust your partner

  • Know the building blocks of longform improv

  • Be ready for Level 2 and the continued path toward full-show longform

Class Show

Level 1 concludes with a relaxed, low-pressure class show where students perform short, grounded scenes for friends, family, and fellow students. The goal isn’t polish — it’s play.

This show gives students:

  • A chance to celebrate what they’ve learned

  • A supportive environment to try an improv show for the first time

  • Ensemble bonding and a sense of accomplishment

  • A fun milestone that marks their readiness for Level 2

The show is optional, encouraged, and always filled with laughter and support.
